I am a First Nations and Ukrainian person. I grew up with a deep understanding of my Ukrainian heritage, but always felt a disconnect from my First Nations side as it was ignored. The constant search of wanting to know that side of myself gave me the push I needed for this project. This project allowed me to lean into an unknowingness and unfamiliarity into my family’s history.
Taken with a medium format film camera, this photographic series is held together by birch frames. The birch frames are important to this series as the trees are everywhere on the reservation and used in different medicines and rituals. The location being on Muskoday First Nations Reservation, is where my father’s family is from and understanding this land has lead me in a direction of researching and gaining knowledge of their pasts.
